Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Metallurgist to join our team at Exoben. As a Metallurgist, you will play a critical role in overseeing the processing, purification, and shaping of lithium and sodium metals for use in cutting-edge energy storage technologies. You will work closely with other engineers, chemists, and production teams to ensure that the highest standards of metal purity and performance are met for advanced applications. Your expertise in refining and metal processing will help optimize production efficiency, scalability, and sustainability across Exoben’s operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Metal Refinement & Purification: Oversee and optimize the chemical and electrochemical processes used to refine lithium and sodium from raw materials, ensuring the highest levels of purity for advanced applications.
- Process Development & Optimization: Develop and improve metal processing techniques, including electrolysis, thermal treatments, and alloying, to maximize efficiency and minimize energy consumption during the refinement process.
- Shaping & Forming of Metals: Collaborate with manufacturing teams to design and implement processes for shaping lithium and sodium metals into specific forms required for battery and other high-performance applications.
- Material Characterization: Conduct in-depth material characterization using techniques such as electron microscopy, spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction to assess metal properties and performance, ensuring alignment with industry standards and application requirements.
- Scaling Up Production: Work with process engineers to scale laboratory metal purification and shaping processes to full industrial-scale production, maintaining quality and efficiency across large volumes.
- Quality Assurance & Control: Establish and implement quality control procedures to monitor the purity, structure, and performance of lithium and sodium metals during production, ensuring that all materials meet the rigorous standards required for energy storage applications.
- Environmental Impact Reduction: Develop and refine metallurgical processes that reduce waste, emissions, and energy consumption, aligning with Exoben’s sustainability goals and environmental regulations.
- Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: Partner with chemical engineers, environmental scientists, and R&D teams to integrate metallurgical processes into the broader extraction and production systems, ensuring seamless workflows from raw material processing to final product.
- Research & Innovation: Lead and contribute to research initiatives focused on discovering new metallurgical techniques or refining existing processes to improve efficiency, scalability, and environmental sustainability in metal processing.
- Process Monitoring & Troubleshooting: Monitor production processes in real-time to ensure consistency and quality. Troubleshoot any issues that arise in metal refining and shaping processes, implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Documentation & Reporting: Prepare detailed technical reports, documenting all process development, testing, and optimization activities. Provide recommendations for improvements and present findings to internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all metallurgical processes comply with local, national, and international regulations regarding environmental and workplace safety standards.
Qualifications:
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with a focus on metal processing and refinement.
- Experience: 3+ years of experience in metallurgical processes, particularly related to the extraction, refining, and shaping of metals like lithium, sodium, or other alkali metals.
- Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of metal processing techniques, including smelting, electrochemical refinement, alloy development, and thermal treatment processes.
- Materials Characterization Skills: Proficiency in the use of characterization tools and techniques such as electron microscopy, XRD (X-ray diffraction), spectroscopy, and metallography for analyzing metal properties.
- Process Optimization: Experience in developing and scaling up metallurgical processes from lab-scale to industrial-scale production, with a focus on efficiency, quality, and sustainability.
- Environmental & Safety Compliance: Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and safety standards related to metal processing and refining, with a demonstrated commitment to sustainability.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze and interpret complex metallurgical data and make data-driven recommendations to improve processes and product quality.
- Collaboration Skills: Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with experience working in multidisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, and production staff.
- Problem-Solving Abilities: Proven track record of identifying process inefficiencies or challenges and implementing effective solutions to optimize production and performance.
Preferred qualifications
- Advanced Degree: Master’s or PhD in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with specialized knowledge in metal processing for industrial applications.
- Industry Expertise: Extensive experience in lithium or sodium metal processing, particularly in applications related to energy storage or battery manufacturing.
- Process Modeling: Familiarity with simulation software (e.g., COMSOL, Thermo-Calc) for modeling metallurgical processes and predicting metal behavior during processing.
- Sustainability Initiatives: A strong commitment to sustainable practices in metallurgy, with experience in developing environmentally friendly metal processing techniques that minimize waste and energy consumption.
