Job Description:

We are seeking an accomplished Head of Research & Development (R&D) to oversee and lead all R&D initiatives across Exoben’s core areas of expertise: battery technology, lithium extraction, and EV infrastructure. This leadership role will be responsible for guiding research strategy, managing cross-functional R&D teams, and driving technological breakthroughs that align with Exoben’s mission of innovation and sustainability. The ideal candidate will bring a blend of scientific expertise, leadership capabilities, and strategic insight to deliver transformative energy solutions from concept through commercialization.

This is a senior leadership role that requires deep technical expertise, proven research management experience, and the ability to translate scientific discoveries into commercially viable technologies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Define and execute a comprehensive R&D strategy that drives technological innovation and aligns with Exoben’s business goals. Set a clear vision for the future of energy storage, lithium extraction, and EV infrastructure technologies, ensuring that Exoben leads the market in these critical sectors.
  • Oversee all R&D activities related to advanced battery technologies (e.g., lithium-ion, solid-state, sodium-ion), direct lithium extraction (DLE), and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Lead research programs focused on creating groundbreaking technologies and products that improve performance, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Develop and manage the R&D technology roadmap, ensuring alignment with Exoben’s broader strategic goals. Drive the development of innovative technologies that address key industry challenges, such as energy density in batteries, sustainable lithium sourcing, and scalable EV infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with the CTO, VP of Engineering, and other senior leaders to integrate R&D efforts across product development, operations, and business development. Ensure a seamless transition of technologies from the research phase to commercialization.
  • Lead research teams in developing new products and improving existing technologies. Oversee the full lifecycle of R&D projects from initial concept and feasibility studies through prototype development, testing, and product launch.
  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing R&D team composed of scientists, engineers, and technical specialists. Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning within the R&D department, ensuring that team members are motivated and equipped to deliver breakthrough solutions.
  • Oversee the development and management of Exoben’s intellectual property portfolio, ensuring that R&D efforts result in patentable technologies and processes. Work closely with legal teams to protect new inventions and secure competitive advantages.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with academic institutions, research organizations, government agencies, and industry partners. Collaborate on joint R&D projects and secure funding for innovative research through grants and partnerships.
  • Ensure that sustainability is a core focus of all R&D initiatives. Drive the development of environmentally friendly technologies, such as low-energy lithium extraction processes, recyclable battery materials, and green manufacturing methods.
  • Oversee the R&D budget, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently to high-impact projects. Balance short-term and long-term research investments to support both immediate product needs and future innovation pipelines.
  • Lead efforts to rigorously test and validate new technologies and products. Work closely with engineering teams to establish testing protocols that ensure safety, reliability, and performance standards are met before commercialization.
  • Ensure that R&D outputs are designed for manufacturability. Collaborate with the manufacturing and operations teams to ensure smooth scaling of new technologies and products, from prototypes to mass production.
  • Ensure that all R&D activities comply with industry standards, environmental regulations, and safety protocols. Collaborate with regulatory agencies to ensure that new technologies meet all applicable certifications and regulations.
  • Collaborate with the business development and marketing teams to transition R&D projects into market-ready products. Ensure that new products are designed to meet market demands and are aligned with Exoben’s growth strategies.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with R&D projects, including technical challenges, regulatory hurdles, and competitive threats. Develop contingency plans to ensure the timely delivery of R&D milestones and strategic goals.
  • Stay informed of emerging technologies and trends in energy storage, materials science, and EV infrastructure. Identify potential acquisition opportunities or partnerships to bring in complementary technologies and accelerate Exoben’s R&D capabilities.
Qualifications:
  • Educational Background: PhD in Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field. Extensive research experience in energy storage, materials science, or related fields is required.
  • Experience: 10+ years of senior-level R&D leadership experience, preferably in the energy, technology, or industrial sectors. Proven track record of managing R&D projects from concept to commercialization, with a focus on innovation and sustainability.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep expertise in one or more of the following areas: advanced battery technologies, lithium extraction processes, energy storage, or EV infrastructure. Strong knowledge of R&D methodologies, product development processes, and intellectual property management.
Preferred qualifications
  • Advanced Degree: PhD in Engineering, Materials Science, Energy Systems, or a related field.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications in research management or project management, such as Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or Project Management Professional (PMP).
  • Industry Experience: Extensive experience in energy storage, materials science, or industrial processes, with a focus on bringing disruptive technologies to market.
