This is a key opportunity to work on some of the most advanced battery technologies in the world, directly impacting energy storage innovations for electric vehicles, grid storage, and beyond.
Key Responsibilities:
- Thermal Management System Design: Design, develop, and implement advanced thermal management systems for battery packs, ensuring efficient heat transfer and dissipation during both charge and discharge cycles.
- Heat Transfer Optimization: Analyze and optimize heat transfer processes within battery packs, focusing on minimizing thermal gradients, managing heat accumulation, and preventing hot spots that can degrade battery performance or lead to safety issues.
- Cooling & Heating Solutions: Develop active and passive cooling systems (e.g., liquid cooling, air cooling, phase-change materials) as well as heating systems (for cold-weather applications) to maintain optimal battery temperatures in diverse environmental conditions.
- Thermal Modeling & Simulations: Use thermal simulation software (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL, Fluent) to model heat generation and dissipation within battery cells, modules, and packs. Perform transient thermal simulations to predict how the battery responds under various conditions, such as fast charging, high discharge rates, and temperature fluctuations.
- Thermal Runaway Prevention: Implement strategies to mitigate thermal runaway risks in battery systems, focusing on improving safety protocols, containment measures, and cooling solutions that prevent cascading failures in multi-cell configurations.
- Material Selection for Thermal Management: Work closely with material scientists and battery engineers to select materials that enhance thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, and thermal stability in battery modules. Evaluate phase-change materials, thermal interface materials (TIMs), and other advanced technologies to improve thermal regulation.
- Battery Pack Design & Integration: Collaborate with design engineers to integrate thermal management systems into battery packs, ensuring seamless integration with structural, electrical, and mechanical components. Ensure thermal systems are designed for manufacturability, durability, and efficiency.
- Testing & Validation: Conduct thermal testing on battery systems in laboratory and real-world conditions to validate thermal models, optimize cooling/heating strategies, and ensure that systems meet performance and safety standards. Perform heat generation tests, cycle tests, and extreme temperature tests.
- Safety & Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all thermal management solutions comply with industry safety standards and regulations (such as ISO, UL, or IEC standards). Focus on developing robust safety measures that enhance battery system reliability and protect users from thermal hazards.
- Real-Time Monitoring: Work with electrical engineers to develop and implement real-time temperature monitoring systems that track thermal conditions within the battery pack during operation. Design feedback loops that trigger cooling mechanisms or limit battery operation in extreme thermal conditions.
- Energy Efficiency in Thermal Systems: Develop energy-efficient thermal management solutions that minimize power consumption while effectively regulating temperature, especially in applications where power efficiency is critical (e.g., electric vehicles, portable energy storage).
- Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with mechanical engineers, materials scientists, and electrochemists to ensure that thermal management systems are aligned with overall battery design goals. Provide feedback on design iterations based on thermal performance metrics.
- Continuous Improvement & Innovation: Continuously research and evaluate emerging thermal technologies, materials, and techniques to improve the performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness of thermal management systems. Apply innovative approaches to address new challenges in battery thermal management.
- Documentation & Reporting: Prepare detailed reports, including thermal analysis, system design documentation, testing protocols, and performance results. Communicate findings to internal teams, external stakeholders, and regulatory bodies. Contribute to patent filings and technical publications.
Qualifications:
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with a strong focus on heat transfer, thermodynamics, and thermal management systems. A Master’s or PhD is preferred.
- Experience: 3+ years of experience in thermal management systems, particularly in battery technology, energy storage systems, or electronics cooling. Experience in designing cooling and heating solutions for lithium-ion or sodium-ion batteries is highly desirable.
- Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of heat transfer processes, thermodynamics, and thermal systems design, with experience in managing heat dissipation and thermal regulation in battery systems or other energy storage devices.
- Simulation & Modeling Skills: Proficiency in using simulation tools such as ANSYS, COMSOL, Fluent, or similar for thermal modeling and heat transfer analysis. Experience with transient thermal simulations for predicting temperature behavior under dynamic operating conditions.
- Thermal System Design: Experience in designing both active (e.g., liquid cooling, fan-based systems) and passive (e.g., phase-change materials, heat sinks) thermal management systems. Knowledge of material properties related to thermal conductivity and insulation.
- Battery Knowledge: Solid understanding of battery systems, including thermal runaway mechanisms, heat generation during charging/discharging, and the impact of temperature on battery performance and lifespan.
- Safety & Regulatory Standards: Familiarity with industry standards and safety regulations for battery systems and thermal management, including ISO, UL, and IEC guidelines for thermal safety in energy storage systems.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex thermal issues and implement effective solutions for optimizing battery temperature management.
