Job Description:
We are seeking a highly skilled Materials Scientist to join our Research and Development (R&D) team. As a Materials Scientist, you will be responsible for developing and optimizing materials that are critical to the performance and safety of advanced lithium and sodium batteries. You will work on improving materials such as electrode coatings, solid-state electrolytes, and separators, ensuring they enhance battery life, energy density, thermal stability, and overall efficiency. Your role will involve close collaboration with electrochemists, battery engineers, and other scientists to ensure seamless integration of materials into cutting-edge battery systems.
This role offers a unique opportunity to work on the frontier of material science and energy storage, contributing directly to the design and deployment of high-performance battery solutions that power the future of clean energy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Materials Research & Development: Design, develop, and optimize advanced materials for lithium and sodium batteries, with a focus on cathode and anode materials, solid-state electrolytes, and separators that enhance battery performance, cycle life, and safety.
- Electrode Coatings: Research and develop advanced coatings for electrodes (both cathode and anode) to improve conductivity, thermal stability, and resistance to degradation, leading to longer battery life and higher energy density.
- Solid-State Electrolyte Development: Innovate and improve solid-state electrolyte materials, ensuring they provide optimal ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability, and safety benefits, especially in high-voltage and high-energy-density applications.
- Separator Technology: Develop advanced separator materials that prevent dendrite formation, enhance thermal stability, and provide robust physical and chemical separation between the anode and cathode, ensuring overall battery safety and efficiency.
- Material Synthesis & Characterization: Synthesize novel materials, perform structural, chemical, and electrochemical characterization using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and spectroscopy to understand material properties and performance.
- Thermal & Mechanical Stability: Focus on enhancing the thermal and mechanical properties of battery materials to ensure they perform optimally under a wide range of operating conditions and stress.
- Testing & Optimization: Conduct rigorous testing and analysis of battery materials to assess their performance under various conditions, including cycling stability, charge/discharge efficiency, thermal behavior, and durability.
- Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with electrochemists, battery engineers, and other scientists to integrate new materials into complete battery systems, ensuring materials are compatible with manufacturing processes and meet performance goals.
- Material Lifecycle & Sustainability: Develop eco-friendly materials and processes with a focus on recyclability, reduced environmental impact, and sustainability. Propose and implement strategies to improve material sourcing, recyclability, and reduce hazardous waste.
- Simulation & Modeling: Utilize computational tools and simulations (e.g., DFT, molecular dynamics) to predict material behavior, guide material design, and optimize the performance of new materials in battery systems.
- Safety Improvements: Enhance battery safety by developing materials that are resistant to degradation, thermal runaway, and other failure modes, ensuring that Exoben’s batteries meet or exceed global safety standards.
- Documentation & Reporting: Prepare detailed technical reports, patents, and presentations on material development, testing protocols, and performance outcomes. Present findings to internal teams, external partners, and industry stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with a focus on battery materials or electrochemical energy storage systems.
- Experience: 3+ years of experience in materials development for energy storage applications, particularly in lithium-ion, sodium-ion, or solid-state batteries.
